All visitor accommodation in Guernsey is regulated under The Tourist Law (1948–1998), as amended.
Any provider offering accommodation to paying guests must obtain an annual permit from the Committee for Economic Development before operating. An application fee applies.
Permits are valid for a maximum of one year, running from 1 April to 31 March of the following year. By submitting a permit application, operators commit to meeting all relevant quality standards and statutory obligations set by the States of Guernsey. Once issued, the permit holder assumes full legal responsibility for adhering to these requirements and for the duty of care owed to guests.
Two types of annual permit are available:
-
Standard Visitor Accommodation Permit: For approved premises operating throughout the full validity period of the permit.
-
Short‑Term Visitor Accommodation Permit: For temporary provision of accommodation in other premises, including private dwellings, where use is time‑limited by the site’s Planning classification.
All permits must be displayed prominently at the premises to which they relate.
