Sark Celebrates the Release of New Victor Hugo Commemorative Stamps

Sark Tourism is delighted to celebrate the release of a new set of commemorative stamps honouring the island’s special connection with the renowned French writer Victor Hugo, whose visits to Sark during his Channel Islands exile inspired some of his most memorable literary works.

Issued by Guernsey Post’s Philatelic Bureau, the six-stamp collection showcases the spectacular landscapes of Sark that captivated Hugo’s imagination and helped shape his creative vision. The issue highlights the island’s rich cultural heritage while introducing a new generation of visitors, collectors and literary enthusiasts to Sark’s enduring place in Hugo’s story.

While living in Guernsey between 1855 and 1870, Victor Hugo made regular visits to Sark, famously describing the island as ‘a sort of fairy castle, full of wonders’. Its dramatic cliffs, peaceful lanes and unspoilt natural beauty left a lasting impression on the celebrated author and influenced works including Toilers of the Sea.

The new stamps depict Hugo across a series of iconic Sark locations, including rural pathways, coastal viewpoints and the island’s rugged western landscapes. Several designs reference scenes associated with Toilers of the Sea, reflecting the deep connection between Sark’s environment and Hugo’s literary legacy.

A representative from Sark Tourism, said:

‘We are thrilled to see Sark’s unique relationship with Victor Hugo recognised through this beautiful stamp collection. These stamps are a wonderful celebration of Sark’s cultural heritage and an invitation for visitors to discover the places that inspired one of France’s greatest authors. From our dramatic coastline and towering cliffs to our peaceful lanes and dark skies, Sark continues to inspire creativity, reflection and imagination today.

We are enormously grateful to James Colmer for his remarkable artistic interpretation of Victor Hugo on Sark. His paintings capture not only the beauty of the island, but also the sense of wonder, solitude and inspiration that Hugo found here. Through his talent and deep appreciation of Channel Islands heritage, James has helped tell Sark’s story in a way that is both timeless and engaging.’

The release also provides an opportunity to celebrate Sark as a destination for literary tourism, history, walking and nature-based experiences. Visitors can explore many of the landscapes associated with Hugo’s visits while experiencing the tranquillity and natural beauty that remain largely unchanged since the nineteenth century.
